Writing Coach

Anne Sobel, MFA

Anne Sobel has done some things that look good in a bio, like writing the Arabic-language Netflix drama The Exchange and producing the PBS documentaries Represent and The Workers Cup. But over time, she’s realized that’s not the work that she’s most proud of. It’s not even what she’s best at.

Where Anne really shines, and what she really loves, is bringing out the best in people.

As a documentary producer, the directors that Anne relentlessly championed (even when the chips were down) eventually got into Sundance, were nominated for Emmys, and won prestigious fellowships and grants. As a film professor at Northwestern in Qatar, she mentored students whose projects were nominated for Student Oscars and picked up by Al Jazeera. She wrote letters of recommendation for graduates who went on to MFA, PhD, and JD programs at NYU, USC, UCLA, and Harvard. Twice, an admissions officer wrote to tell her that what she saw in a student stood out on their application.
